Hispanic Heritage Month is all about going back to our roots, but it’s also about sharing that culture with the world. The past, present, and future are all worth celebration, and a celebration is made even better when the whole community joins in. That is why highlighting the rich diversity of traditions, stories, and art from within the Hispanic and Latino community becomes a powerful bridge between generations. Through creative expression and hands-on discovery, young people not only honor the resilience and achievements of those who came before them, but they also find their own voices to shape what comes next. When neighbors, families, and youth gather to dance, create, and learn together, culture transforms from a history lesson into a living, breathing experience that strengthens the fabric of the entire neighborhood.
Nowhere is this more evident than in NYC, where immigrant communities from all over Latin America have gathered in little enclaves; sharing food, traditions, and customs that have become a very colorful thread in the greater tapestry of New York City.
“NYC Brings Us Together”: Celebrating Our Shared Story
This is the idea behind CASW’s campaign this month, “NYC Brings Us Together” (Or, “NYC, BUT” for short). New York City is a place where people from all over the world come together, and living here often means interacting with different cultures on a daily basis. We see this all the time in the communities surrounding our sites, where different cultures make up classrooms, workplaces, neighborhoods, and even friendships. This is especially true for the Hispanic/Latino communities, who are united by a common language and, in the case of our CASW community, a shared city. This month, we want to honor the unique background that makes each person who they are, while also celebrating the fact that they are a part of something bigger, right here in NYC.
Discovering NYC’s Hispanic Enclaves: A Home Away from Home
In the city that we call home, we’re all New Yorkers, regardless of how we came to be here. The funny part is, that, for many cultures, this city has many spots that feel like a home away from home. That’s why we created a map detailing the different enclaves for Latin culture around the city, just in case anyone feels a little homesick or wants to share a little piece of their neighbor’s story.
