Planning around the New York City Public Schools (NYC DOE) calendar is essential for managing childcare, work, and family vacations. Here are the key dates and major takeaways parents need to know for the 2026–2027 school year.
1. Late Start and Late Finish
- First Day of School: Thursday, September 10, 2026
- Last Day of School: Monday, June 28, 2027
Because Labor Day falls late in September, the school year starts later than usual. Consequently, the final day stretches into late June—landing on a Monday.
2. Major Recesses & Breaks

4. Election Day is Remote Learning
Date: Tuesday, November 3, 2026
Students do not have a day off for Election Day. Instead, all NYC DOE students will participate in synchronous or asynchronous remote instruction.
5. Staff Days & Grade-Specific Days Off
Feb 1, 2027: High schools (and 6–12 schools) are closed for staff development; elementary and middle schools are in session.
June 8, 2027: Clerical day for 3-K, Pre-K, elementary, middle, and D75 programs (no attendance). High schools remain in session.
June 10, 2027: Anniversary Day / Chancellor’s Conference Day (all students off).
