This month, CASW-Workforce hosted two summer job referral events for more than 1,500 SYEP participants. On June 19th, 2023, in conjunction with the second job referral event, Workforce held its annual Juneteenth celebration. This year’s theme is “Back to the Roots,” and in recognition, our media team put together an interactive exhibit for visitors.
The exhibit was a multi-media experience, consisting of a mural and sculptural component depicting the symbolic fists breaking free from their chains. The artwork was surrounded by graphics discussing important figures in the preservation of African history and culture. Visitors could also watch educational videos on the origins of the holiday on various screens throughout the office.
Participants were also encouraged to sign the painting, in solidarity with the principles of freedom and inclusion. Workforce also had the honor of hosting DYCD Commissioner Keith Howard and Nurus Salam, DYCD’s Senior In-school Youth Workforce Director, both of whom signed the mural. Signatures also included CASW’s Executive Director; Yokasta Morales, Deputy Director; Atenedoro Gonzalez, and CASW-Workforce’s very own Director; Julissa Figueroa.
Thanks to our amazing team and participants, this summer is already shaping up to be a success!
