The world is made up of diverse perspectives, this is especially apparent in New York City; a cultural metropolis made up of individuals from all over the globe. Our communities are thus made richer by our unique differences. This is the sentiment behind the latest event organized by our COMPASS/SONYC programs at PS/MS 37; a cultural festival in which students presented their research on different nations. Guests were welcomed to travel the world without leaving the bounds of the school cafeteria!!!

Origins of the Cultural Festival
This event was a long time coming, as participants had long been learning about their assigned countries in their respective groups. For months, the groups have been researching and experimenting with different aspects of these cultures; from food, to art, to dance, and even fashion. For months, this has provided a special opportunity for participants to get acquainted with their respective assignments, and form an in-depth appreciation for each nation.

Impact of Cultural Festival
The truth is, exposing young people to cultures that may be different than their own is highly beneficial. Not only does this teach students about the larger world, but it also encourages them to imagine and empathize with others. Lessons of this context can be applied wherever they go, whether it’s abroad or at home with their very own peers and neighbors!!!
