As an organization that is dedicated to providing youth services, we like to think of ourselves as a de facto “safe space” for young people around NYC. Of course, this is only made possible to our dedicated colleagues that show up to work with this mentality every single day. In this installment of “CASW Profiles,” we sit down with Nelson Castro, a conscientious group leader at PS/MS 37 who feels that he’s learned just as much from his students as they’ve learned from him.
How did you get your start at CASW? In what ways has the agency changed since you started and, furthermore, in what ways have you changed?
“I got my start because of my past experience working with children and a referral. The agency has found many different ways to incentivize students, such as offering rewards, recognition, and opportunities for advancement. My role has encouraged me to be more social and outgoing.”
Where would you personally like to see the organization go in the future?
“I would want there to be a location for every child in need of a place like CASW.”
What is your most impactful memory at CASW?
“Once I was purposely hit with a rock thrown by a student and it drew blood. No matter how upset I was, I did not lose my composure. So in many ways, CASW has sharpened my patience.
