People often underestimate how beneficial an arts education can be for a child; an activity like learning an instrument can have positive effects on their self-esteem, discipline, and overall performance in school. If you’ve been tuned in to CASW News, then you’ll know that our afterschool participants at PS 310 have been learning to play the violin and have been on the way to becoming young musicians over the past few months. At the beginning of May, we had the opportunity to witness the end result: A full on recital where students were able to show their newfound skill and play music that they’ve learned throughout the year!!!

Creating an Accessible Space for Young Musicians
This past year, we’ve seen incredible growth from our students as they’ve dedicated themselves to learning their instruments. Any new skill requires sustained time and effort, but learning violin takes a certain kind of patience and attention to detail; and we are certainly proud of our students for rising to meet this challenge! Of course, none of this would be possible without our staff at PS 310, who are dedicated to providing an inclusive, accessible environment where students can learn; this makes the process of learning to play the violin just a little more doable!
From First Notes to the Big Stage: Student Spotlight
According to Sophia, one of 5th grade participants at PS 310; “It’s fun to experience something new – I haven’t played the violin before.” The truth is, anything new will always be a struggle at first, but as students progress, their skills (and self esteem) grow. That’s why watching the students give their first recital was so fulfilling – it’s a chance to see just how far they’ve come!!!
