They say that girls just want to have fun, and while that’s true, we also think they want opportunities to learn and show off their skills along the way! That’s why CASW is proud to provide spaces for girls and women to share their experiences, learn new skills, and build incredible relationships! This is the mission of NYC Boss’d Up, our girls’ group at Dyckman Community Center, which seeks to empower young girls to see themselves as leaders by providing educational experiences, mentorship, and opportunities to connect with peers!
The Mission: Mentorship, Skills, and Strong Connections
We’re almost three weeks into Summer Rising and SYEP, and the girls have been enjoying an eventful summer where each day has brought its own share of adventure. From field trips around the city to making their very own “girl power” themed apparel, the goal this summer has been for each girl to expand her mind, embrace her creativity, and feel the confidence to be herself. All fun aside, these are experiences that provide young women with the tools to embrace leadership and chase their dreams. This year’s cohort is made possible thanks to the ongoing support of Council Member Carmen de la Rosa from District 10 in Manhattan, an inspiring woman that every little girl aspires to become.
Overcoming Societal Pressures Through Community and Peer Support
As girls approach their teen years, they reach a crucial point for emotional and social development. Adolescence can seem like a turbulent time for most, but in the case of girls, it can be especially challenging in the face of societal pressures faced by women. Providing young women with a space where they can see female role models and talk to other girls their age can be downright comforting – suddenly the burdens of growing up seem manageable, and they even have friends in their same shoes.
NYC Boss’d Up is surely on the way to becoming a formative experience and a core memory for each of these inspiring girls!
